Surfboards are expensive

Friday, September 5th, 2008, 2:06 pm [General]

You got that right!  Globally the market varies.  I can speak for Cali because this is where I work and play.

There are several agents at work which have the greatest impact on surfboard prices here.

For the most part it comes down to California's regulation of small business.  The, cost of raw materials and supplies needed by surfboard manufacturers and fixed costs of doing business here in California are at formidable barriers for your local shapers to hurdle.

  • Costs associated with employing worker's is a prohibited factor due to cost of Workman's Compensation, liability, fire and health insurance.

The climate in California for making surfboards is not like it used to be.  That said, it it not all for the detriment, we have produced a greener approach to manufacturing surfboards in the USA, improved surfboard design while maintaining our artisianship.

Other contributing factors to price of surfboards which have affected surfboard prices are:

  • Closing of Clark Foam
  • Importation of surfboards from just about everywhere
  • The advent of the "machine."

We could go on all night but the bottom line is you, the surfer, need and want to buy the best quality surfboard possible.  You should, as much as possible, buy your surfboards from local area shapers and local, reputable surfboard shops and local reputable on-line surf companies.

If you are looking to purchase a locally made surfboard, I can point in the right direction if you simply send me a note and give me some basic information about yourself.

  • Where you live (zip code if you wish)
  • Where you will be surfing (type of wave to be ridden)
  • What type of surfing you will be doing (Longboard, shortboard, fish) etc.
